About Basil. Family-owned & operated since 1999, Basil is Medfield’s culinary gem.
Basil is the realization of a personal dream that became a neighborhood icon.
Basil is the realization of a dream for owners Tom and Karen McGue. Tom and Karen grew up in Medfield. They were friends and classmates at Medfield High, and the seeds of their future life can be found in their yearbook. Under Tom’s picture is written, “Ambition-to be the chef of my own restaurant.” Tom went to Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, graduating with degrees in culinary arts and hotel management. Tom and Karen married in 1987, started a family, and Tom worked at several Boston area restaurants, gaining experience, honing his skills, always looking forward to that dreamed-of place of his own.
Then, in 1999, a restaurant in Medfield was for sale. Located on a quiet residential street, the building began as a house in the early 1900s, but was converted into a restaurant in the 1930s. It has been home to many different establishments over the years; long-time Medfield residents have fond memories of the spot as the Francis Cafe. Fast forward almost 20 years: Tom, Karen and their family have made Basil a successful and popular dining spot.
The Medfield Press talks to Tom McGue, owner and chef of Basil restaurant in Medfield, as part of its "Hometown Cooks" series.
The old building has been transformed, thanks to Karen’s flair for decorating, into a warm, beautiful bistro. Their son David, a trained chef, works with his Dad in the kitchen to create fresh takes on familiar favorites and exciting new dishes. Daughter Christine, currently a college student, assists on weekends and vacations with catering and food expediting. Together they prove that dreams can come true and that you can go home again, nearly every night of the week, at Basil.
“My favorite restaurant. Been going here for 8 years and never had a bad meal. Great ambiance and food. Owners are friendly. Service is spectacular.”
